Task Brasil - The Abandoned
Street Kids of Brazil Trust
Helping street children… to
help themselves!
We're pleased to announce that on Sunday the 9th March Forest House celebrated its third
anniversary. A total of 18 boys have lived and been helped at the house since
it opened in March 2005. This gives us
cause for celebration and reason to thank you all for having supported us all
these years. Another recent anniversary
was the Casa Roger Turner's second
anniversary on 4 April 2008. This will
be celebrated on 25 April and these celebrations will coincide with the visit
of Task Brasil's Trustees Lady Charlotte Petsopoulos,
Duncan Innes, Ligia da Silva and Lisa Atkins to our Rio projects. Casa Roger Turner goes from strength to
strength.
In 2007 Casa Jimmy provided a
home for 58 children and teenagers, of which 17 were successfully reintegrated
with their families and seven children adopted.
At Casa Roger Turner we had
more than 130 admissions resulting in at least 12 boys living at the house
regularly. Many of them are also
studying English at Cultura Inglesa,
thanks to scholarships generously provided by the school. Many other boys have also benefited from
the day care facilities that Casa Roger Turner offers. We're particularly proud to report that five
of the boys at Casa Roger Turner have recently succeeded in obtaining
apprenticeships, which we hope will help them to become productive and
independent members of Brazilian society in the future.
We are also proud of Daiana who started
university recently (click here
for Daiana's life story). Estacio de Sa
University has generously provided a 20% reduction in their fees, and her
studies are being sponsored by a private individual. Daiana is studying
law and will be contributing 30% of her salary towards her university cost when
she becomes employed. She is looking for
a part-time job with law firms in Rio. Daiana has also been attending English classes on Saturdays
for the last year sponsored by a school of English in Rio. Congratulations to Daiana!!!
The children at Casa Jimmy recently enjoyed an Easter Party, at which they
received presents generously donated by Rio law firm Gouvea
Viera.
Meanwhile, Epsom College Farm has acquired two new residents - two
splendid pigs! Thanks to Mrs Jenny Byers
and her friends from the British Commonwealth Society for playing such a big
part in making this possible! This is a
real milestone in the development of the farm's productive capacity, and enhances
further the educational potential of the project. There are currently seven
residents at Forest House at Epsom College Farm, who are doing very well at
school.
The building of the extension to Casa Jimmy is now well under way. This new home, which is being built in
partnership with the NGO Homeless Child, will provide much needed accommodation
for 20 children aged from six to eleven years.
The pictures below show work being carried out on the foundations of the
new building.
We are also pleased to announce that the US Navy is currently maintaining
its valuable tradition of assisting Task Brasil as part of the visit of the
aircraft carrier USS George Washington to Rio.
The 2008 Flora London Marathon
will take place this Sunday. We have 11 brave runners
raising money for us, including a team of five from AT&T, so why not
come along and cheer them on? You could
also watch our friends at the London School of Samba. They will be performing (and raising much
needed funds for Task Brasil) in Montgomery Square, near to Canary Wharf tube
station from around 9:30 a.m. until 2:00 p.m.
A huge thank you to all of you for all your valuable contribution which has
enabled Task Brasil to keep caring for so many children and teenagers in
need.

We know you share our aims of facilitating the reintegration of these
children and teenagers into society, caring for their immediate needs,
encouraging the development of each one's abilities and potential while
offering them love and security. Task Brasil's
projects aim to make a lasting difference to children and teenagers on the
streets of Rio, providing them with alternative and supporting them before the
damaging influences of street life rob them of their futures.
You can raise money for some of Brazil's vulnerable children and push
yourself to the limit!
We have guaranteed places for runners in the Rio Marathon on Sunday 29th June, held on one of the most beautiful
marathon courses in the world! If you
would like to run the marathon, not only will we organise your hotel and stay
in Rio, but also give you the opportunity to visit Task Brasil's
projects.
Alternatively, in the week before the Rio Marathon the Ecotour is on - you could be one of our
group of intrepid Ecotourists
from 21st to the 29th of June and then support the Task Brasil team that will
be running the marathon!
For the truly ambitious amongst you, we could arrange for you to take part
in the Ecotour and the marathon!
If you are not able to travel to Brazil but still want to support our work
you can join the Task Brasil team on the BUPA
Great Capital Run in July. This is
an annual friendly 10 k.m. fun-run event in one of
London's most charming parks.
